Let’s talk about how to improve your vocabulary and how start using those higher level words.
If you are preparing for the TOEFL or IELTS, if you are writing a lot of e-mails or documents, if you are giving presentations, you should be using more high level vocabulary words!
It’s very difficult to memorize hundred of vocabulary words and then be able to use them-especially in conversation. If you want to sound more professional, or gain more points on an English exam, you need to be strategic about how and when you use these vocabulary words.
Think about the words you use most often. These are the words you want to replace with a higher level vocabulary word. Here are my recommendations for words you should NOT use during the TOEFL, IELTS, or academic writing. On the left, you will see words that are often used in conversation but also often used in all sections of the TOEFL and IELTS. On the right, these are words that are higher level but can be easily substituted for the words on the left.

Look at your writing and record yourself speaking. What are the words you use again and again in your responses? These are the words you need to substitute for higher level vocabulary words. Make sure to practice the pronunciation of these higher level words before using them in your responses.
